這首歌首次出現於Mecano樂隊1986年的專輯Entre el cielo y el suelo中。由Loona翻唱的月亮之子從98年12月28日到99年1月11日一直居於德國歌曲排行的首位，也是同一時期瑞士單曲排行的第二名。還有許多藝人翻唱過這首歌曲，如Sarah Brightman，Belle Pérez。sarah brightman的翻唱版本再次使這首單曲名聲遠播。
歌詞背景
這首歌的歌詞描述了一位吉普賽少女，她向月亮女神祈禱整宿，希望得到一位丈夫。最後，月亮女神向她保證她會找到一位丈夫，但作為回報，她要獻給月亮他們的第一個孩子。
後來這個孩子被月亮女神托到了空中，當孩子高興時，月圓於天空，當孩子哭泣時，月亮會衰變為月牙型的搖籃來安撫孩子。
整首歌的副歌部分都是在訴說月亮想做母親卻找不到愛人的苦惱，並質問月亮她如何撫養一個人類的孩子。
