The Romans, who ruled the empire, knew that there lay, many months journey eastwards by caravan route across the mountains and deserts of Central Asia, a land where the Silk People lived; but they did not know that the Silk People inhabitad an empire as large and civilized as their own. Four centuries after its foundation this Chinese empire of the Silk People fel apart. Another century, and the whole northern half of China, including the metropolitan area-the very cradle and heart of Chinese civilization, was lost to the barbarian hordes. But whereas Rome fell never to rise again (for the Holy Roman Empire of the Franks revived the name only and not the reality), the Chinese empire was finally restored, and for three centuries, from A.D. 618 to A.D. 907, China was the richest, greatest and most civilized power in the whole world. Of course, "China" is not what the Chinese themselves called their country. The Silk People called themselves "men of Han", because their empire was founded by a Prince of Han; and the restored empire of the seventh century was called "T'ang" for a similar reason. Old habits die hard, for the Chinese to this day speak of "Han People" and "Han Speech" when referring to the Chinese race and language, whilst in parts of South China which became fully acculturized later than the rest, "T'ang" is used in much the same way.
