出生在南卡羅來納的歌手、作曲家和吉他手戴夫·巴恩斯在密西西比長大，在那裡他最開始著迷於嘻哈但同時受父母影響也展露出了他對經典靈魂,藍調和R&B的喜愛。在大學時他開始意識到他的使命是成為一位音樂家和詞作者。在畢業於中田納西州立大學,拿到主修唱片工業管理的學位後，Barnes搬到了田納西州的納什維爾，目的是為了開始他的專業音樂生涯並取得音樂上的成功。起初他為當地的聲民歌所吸引，在當地的插電演奏會上表演個人獨奏，但最後他決定進入一個更具有導向性的領域並開始玩樂隊，樂隊里有吉他手賈斯丁·Rosolion，貝斯手馬特·曼格諾彈，鍵盤手本Shive，鼓手喬希·羅賓遜。Barnes發行了兩張獨立的專輯，有2004年的《Brother》和《Bring the Sun》以及2006年《Chasing Mississippi》，都由Ed Cash出品。2008年加入Razor&Tie後發行了專輯《You and Me and the World》。2010年04月06日，Barnes發行了他在Razor&Tie的第二張唱片《What We Want，What We Get》
