Guide to Programs of the National Natural Science Foundation ofChina was first compiled in 1986 and published and circulated in thewhole country in 1987. This is the fth issue. In the past four years, al-most 50 000 volumes of the former four issues were circulated, whichwere sold up as long as every issue was published and highly appreciatedby scientists and management personnel in science and technology of thecountry, thus, indicating that Guide to Programs has played a very ac-tive role in the spread and implementation of science policies of thecountry and in the guidance to the application for projects to be fundedby the F oundation. Each issue of this Guide to Programs has been trans-lated into English on account of exchange with other countries. It proveshelpful for scientists of other countries to understand the science policyand funding scope of the country, and, therefore, cooperation and ex-change between China and other countries have been promoted in natu-ral sciences.The formulation of the Guide to Programs is a very serious work.Firstly, every science department should make a draft of it according toscience policies and actual conditions of the country as well as interna-tional developing trends of different disciplines referred to, and thenamendment to the draft will be made after consulting experts outsideNSFC, finally the draft amended should be seriously examined by ex-perts concerned and decided accordingly.
