Erle Loran

人物簡介

埃爾·羅蘭於1905年出生於明尼蘇達州的明尼阿波利斯市。他曾就讀於明尼蘇達大學一段時間，之後進入明尼阿波里斯藝術學院(Minneapolis School of Art)，師從卡梅倫·布斯(Cameron Booth)，並於1926年畢業。羅蘭畢業後獲得了Chaloner Foundation(巴黎獎)的旅行獎學金，並在歐洲度過了接下來的四年，住在Cézanne的工作室。羅蘭一直著迷於藝術家保羅Cézanne的工作，它激勵了他的一生，在他的繪畫和寫作。他後來寫了幾本書和文章，基於他在曾經是Cézanne的世界裡度過的時間。回國後，羅蘭搬到加州，不僅開始繪畫並繼續他的藝術生涯，還在加州大學伯克利分校任教。從1952年到1956年，他擔任藝術系主席，並繼續在那裡教學，直到1973年退休，並獲得了大學獎狀。伯克利大學再次授予羅蘭，這一次是在1981年，宣布他為榮譽教授。

在20世紀40年代，羅蘭屬於一個為“當代圖形編年史”項目製作石版畫的約20位藝術家的團體。大約在同一時期，他出版了兩本書(其中一本是成功的Cézanne Composition)，並在隨後的十年里在藝術雜誌上發表了兩篇文章。到20世紀60年代末，羅蘭改變了關注點，開始畫更抽象的圖像，融合了歐普藝術、波普藝術和硬邊藝術。也許他的新方向受到了他在紐約師從藝術家漢斯·霍夫曼的影響，這位來自歐洲的藝術家對把歐洲的現代技術和哲學帶到美國非常感興趣。羅蘭最終受到視力障礙的影響，但他一直堅持繪畫，直到去世前一年。他於1999年在加州伯克利去世。
