俗以喜人面諛者曰"喜戴高帽".有京朝官出仕於外者，往別其師·師日："外官不易為，宜慎之·''其人曰："某備有高帽一百，適人輒送其一，當不至所齟齬也·''師怒曰："吾輩直道事人，何須如此！''其人曰："天下不喜戴高帽如吾師者，能有幾人歟？''師頷其首曰："汝言不為無見·''其人出，語人曰："吾高帽一百，今止存九十九矣·''
譯文
通常把喜歡別人當面阿諛的人稱為：喜歡戴高帽子。有一個人準備去外省做官，去和他的老師告別。老師說：“外省的官不好做，你應該謹慎從事。”那人說：“我準備了一百頂高帽，碰到人就送人一頂，應當不至於有矛盾而不快。”老師很生氣，說：“我們應以忠直之道對待別人，為什麼一定要這樣做呢？”那人說：“天下像老師這樣不喜歡戴高帽的人，能有幾個啊？”老師點頭說：“你的話也不是沒有見識。”那人出來後，告訴別人說：“我一百頂高帽，現在只剩下九十九頂了。”
