本叢書所選取的素材涉及國際政治、文化、經濟、科技、文娛、體育及社會生活等多個方面。內容豐富、選材新穎、具有時代感，為廣大學生所喜聞樂見。
叢書的裝訂靈活別致：在頁面的內側打有一行針孔，便於撕取。既適合在老師指導下集體使用，也適合學生個別使用。本叢書的高一和高二4個分冊，各有54篇閱讀材料；高三2個分冊各有14個單元，每單元有5篇閱讀材料。在每篇材料的題目下方，印有空格供學生填寫姓名、答案以及便於老師批改、評分。每篇材料後均標有“建議閱讀時間”，老師可利用課前幾分鐘讓學生做此閱讀練習。這樣既能使老師及時了解學生的閱讀水平，又節省時間；學生個人使用時也可根據“建議閱讀時間”來測試自己閱讀水平的提高情況。
