迪士尼卡通工作室成立於1988年，最初被命名為“迪士尼電影卡通”（Disney MovieToons）。工作室於1990年發布了第一部作品《唐老鴨俱樂部電影版：失落的神燈》。20世紀90年代起，由於華特迪士尼公司決定為部分華特迪士尼動畫工作室的影片製作續集，並以錄像帶首映的方式發行。電影《阿拉丁》的續集《賈方復仇記》便成為了工作室的第一部錄像帶首映作品。此後的十年間，迪士尼卡通工作室製作了數十部動畫電影的續集。
2003年，“迪士尼電影卡通”的管理權由迪士尼電視動畫部門轉到了華特迪士尼動畫工作室，並且更名為“迪士尼卡通工作室”
2007年，艾德文·卡特姆成為了迪士尼卡通工作室的總裁，並對工作室的定位進行了改革。改革決定不再製作低質量而又飽受詬病的續集電影，轉而製作迪士尼電影的衍生電影並創作原創電影。受此影響，原計畫中為電影《小飛象》、《四眼天雞》等製作的續集計畫被取消。
2008年，改革後的首部電影《小叮噹》以錄像帶首映的形式對外發行。工作室2009年至2012年連續四年推出了《小叮噹》的續集電影。
