阿道司·赫胥黎(英國作家阿道司赫胥黎)

阿道司.赫胥黎(Aldous Leonard Huxley, 1894年7月26日－1963年11月22日)英格蘭作家，屬於著名的赫胥黎家族。祖父是生物學家、進化論支持者托馬斯·亨利·赫胥黎(Thomas Henry Huxley, 1825—1895)。

少時就讀於伊頓公學，後畢業於牛津大學的巴利俄爾學院。他下半生在美國生活，1937年移居洛杉磯，在那裡生活到1963年去世。曾想做醫生，卻因為視力障礙改變初衷，從事了文學。作為生物學家的兒子，他從小受到良好的教育。他對人類生活中的矛盾具有超人的預見力。儘管一次眼疾幾乎讓他視力全失，但在學習了盲文後，他逐步開始寫作，先後創作了許多膾炙人口的小說，並在20年代成為一個明星人物。

他以小說和大量散文作品聞名於世，也出版短篇小說、遊記、電影故事和劇本。通過他的小說和散文，赫胥黎充當了社會道德、標準和理想的拷問人，有時候也是批評家。赫胥黎是一個人文主義者，但是在晚年也對通靈題目如超心理學和哲學和神秘主義感興趣。在人生的最後階段，赫胥黎在一些學術圈被認為是現代思想的領導者，位列當時最傑出的知識分子行列。

他在1932年創作的《美麗新世界》讓他名留青史。

他17歲完成了他第一部小說（未出版），並在20歲之後開始嚴肅的寫作。他最初出版的小說都為社會諷刺小說，以《克羅姆·耶婁》（1921年）為始。

在一戰期間，赫胥黎將自己的大部分時間花在了莫雷爾夫人的加辛頓莊園裡。在此他見到了包括伯特蘭·羅素和克里夫·貝爾在內的幾位布盧姆斯伯里派成員。在《克羅姆·耶婁》中，他描繪了在加辛頓的生活。

1919年，他同在加辛頓遇到的比利時女子瑪麗婭·妮斯結婚，育有一子。20年代，一家人在義大利生活了一段時間，赫胥黎也藉此拜訪了自己的朋友大衛·赫伯特·勞倫斯。

個人生活

1919年，他與在加辛頓遇到的比利時女子瑪麗婭·妮斯（1899年9月10日 - 1955年2月12日）結婚，育有一子馬修·赫胥黎（1920年4月19日 - 2005年2月10日）。馬修後來成為作家、人類學家和流行病學家。

1955年妮斯死於乳癌。

1956年他與作家勞拉·阿切拉結婚。她創作了赫胥黎的傳記《時光消逝的瞬間》。

1960年赫胥黎被診斷患有喉癌。在隨後的幾年裡，健康狀況每況愈下的赫胥黎寫出了烏托邦小說《島》。

臨終時的赫胥黎已經無法言語，他通過手寫向妻子勞拉要求“麥角醯二乙胺，100毫克，肌肉注射”。根據勞拉在《時光消逝的瞬間》中的記載，她服從了，在早上11時45分完成了一次注射，並於幾小時後完成了另一次。

他死於1963年11月22日下午5時20分，甘迺迪被暗殺的幾小時之後，享年69歲。他的骨灰被安放在英國薩里郡康普頓沃茨公墓的家族墳墓里。
