“誠”字首見於《尚書》。但作為實詞使用，卻最早見於《左傳》：“明允篤誠”，疏云：“誠者，實也。”又見於《易·文言》：“閑邪存其誠”，“修辭立其誠”，疏云：“誠謂誠實。”又見於《禮記·樂記》：“著誠雲偽”，疏云：“誠謂誠信也。”基本上，“誠”具備四個層面上的含義：首先，指說話符合實際，言語真實不欺；其次，與“偽”相對，即是指真實；第三，誠者成也，成就、完成之意；最後，恭敬、審慎的態度，如 《禮記·大學》：“欲正其心者，先誠其意

在一般意義上，“誠”即誠實誠懇，主要指主體真誠的內在道德品質；“信”即信用信任，主要指主體“內誠”的外化。“誠”更多地指“內誠於心”，“信”則側重於“外信於人”。“誠”與“信”一組合，就形成了一個內外兼備，具有豐富內涵的辭彙，其基本含義是指誠實無欺，講求信用。作者認為，千百年來，誠信被中華民族視為自身的行為規範和道德修養，形成了其獨具特色並具有豐富內涵的誠信觀。這樣的誠信觀在當今的市場經濟和構建社會主義核心價值體系中具有極其重要的道德作用。
作者簡介
韓震，山東省陽穀縣人，哲學博士，教授，博士生導師，北京外國語大學黨委書記。曾任北京師範大學副校長、北京外國語大學校長。主要社會兼職有：馬克思主義理論研究和建設工程諮詢委員會委員，教育部高等學校教學指導委員會哲學類專業教學指導委員會主任委員，北京市哲學學會副會長等。曾入選北京市“跨世紀青年理論工作者百人工程”培養計畫、教育部“跨世紀人才”培養計畫、人事部等部委首批“新世紀百千萬國家級人才”、中宣部“四個一批”人才培養人選、中組部“哲學社會科學領軍人才”。主要研究方向為近現代歐美哲學、西方歷史哲學、價值哲學。先後主持多項國家和省部級重大攻關項目，多次獲得國家級和省部級人文社會科學優秀成果獎。
