內容簡介
《西方文化讀本》是高等院校文化素質類通識課教材，旨在使學生能夠運用所學的西方文化知識及相關的英語表達方式，進行跨文化交流。作者將本書作為大學英語課程教學改革的嘗試， 把文化教學融入到語言教學之中。本書涵蓋英語文化和歐洲文化的主要階段：古希臘古羅馬文化、聖經文化、文藝復興時期、近現代藝術等。
《西方文化讀本》用英語編寫，力圖為學習者展現西方文化的概貌。編者在選材時儘量將歷史概述與具體故事、知識性和趣味性相結合，調動學習者對閱讀的興趣。潘多拉的盒子、埃及豔后的故事、亞瑟王和他的圓桌騎士、歌德的愛情、尼采的哲學等等，這些對於大部分學生來說曾是""道聽途說""來的模糊形象，都可以在這部書中找到清晰的介紹。為了適應課堂教學和語言操練的需要，我們在每篇選讀後都配備了適合的練習。練習形式豐富多樣，使學生在閱讀之後可以通過練習來檢查和鞏固所學知識。 《西方文化讀本》全書分為8個單元，建議授課學時為30學時左右，一學期完成。每單元五篇閱讀文章，包括三篇基礎閱讀文和兩篇補充閱讀文。語篇長度、難度適中，生詞採用文中注釋的方式，文化背景知識注釋採用腳註方式，方便學習和查找。每篇文章後均有長難句注釋。
