該書以西方出版發展進程為脈絡，以出版史重大事件及其相關人物以及重大事件對出版的影響為主題，以古代希臘羅馬謄寫的出版形式為起點，以數字出版的興起告一段落，系統描繪西方出版業的發展歷史。
作者簡介
蘇世軍，北京印刷學院教授，曾擔任原湖北醫科大學外語部主任、北京印刷學院外語系主任；湖北省翻譯協會常務理事，湖北省大學外語協會理事，北京大學外語協會理事。多年來從事英語和西方文化教學與研究，在國內外發表論著、譯著、教材15部，論文譯文百餘篇，其中有兩項為國家級課題和國際合作項目，獲得歐盟委員會的資助。
