孟加拉國考古學家於2010年發現毗訶羅普爾（Vikrampura）古城，並於2013年首次發掘古城的納提什瓦（Nateshwar）遺址。2014—2018 年，中國湖南省文物考古研究所和阿哥拉薩–毗訶羅普爾（Agrashar Vikrampur）基金會聘請的歐提亞·歐耐斯恩考古研究中心（Oitiya Onneswan Archaeological Research Center）組成聯合考古隊，先後三次對納提什瓦遺址進行了大規模的考古發掘，取得了重大成果。通過地層學和一系列測年數據，納提什瓦遺址可分為兩個時期，年代為8—13世紀。考古發現遺址早晚的規模龐大、具有不同功能的大型佛教遺址，證實了這座都城的存在。作為南亞次大陸最後一個佛教中心的珍貴遺產，這個遺址將載入世界考古學的史冊。
