《種族、兒童、習性(英文版)》以移居在英國北愛爾蘭的華人二代群體為主要研究對象,並根據他們父母的來源地,該群體被劃分為兩個子群體(SUb-group),分別是父母來自中國香港的華人子女和父母來自中國大陸的華人子女,年齡均在12-15歲。《種族、兒童、習性(英文版)》以質性研究的方法,對研究對象進行了長達兩年多的跟蹤觀察和採訪,對來自不同的社會環境、家庭狀況、文化背景、移居在北愛爾蘭的華人二代逐一做了詳細的個案分析。《種族、兒童、習性(英文版)》著重強調,生活在同一西方文化氛圍中的海外華人二代也會有不同的生活經歷,文化心態和言行。同樣是定居在海外的華人,由於他們當年移居海外前所處的文化和社會的環境不同、移居海外的動機和性質不同、在海外生存的方式不同、受教育的程度不同,從而導致了他們的社會地位的不同。*終,因家庭的移民經歷不同,也導致了兩個子群體的父母對子女的教育和期待的不同,進而兩組孩子們在思維和行為上也有一定的差異。
