本課程以問題為導向分類設計為六個專題，第一個專題為環境安全、環境意識、綠色化學等基本概念，其中環境安全的提法相對於環境污染、環境治理、環境保護等概念而言，是廣度與深度上都拓展了的一個環境領域中的國際前沿問題，而綠色化學是化學在可持續發展中的必然趨勢，第一部分將兩者聯繫起來，是引導學習者以跟蹤兩個領域前沿的步伐學習本課程；第二至四部分依次包含了大氣、水和土壤的環境問題及其化學原理等內容；第五部分是闡述各類能源，當前，能源已經成為很多環境問題的直接“導火索”；合理利用能源，特別是各種新能源的開發與利用已經成為解決環境問題的重要途徑；第六部分，簡介食物的重要基本成分以及新陳代謝。食物是人類與動物生存的必要物質，新陳代謝過程是將蘊藏在食物中的能量轉化為人類與動物生存與成長的能源，糧食的短缺、耕地的減少以及成為嚴重的環境問題。然而，當前很多的環境教育中還未重視這一內容，本課程的這一部分是啟發學習者關注糧食與環境問題間的關聯。本課程的另一特色是英文課件，中文講解。英文表述是希望引領學習者能夠閱讀英文的文獻與資料，便於準確掌握與理解環境與化學中的概念，以國際化與全球化的視野是關注環境問題，學習其中的化學知識。
