生平
史蒂文斯於 1951 年出生於北 Rhodesia 的 Luanshya。他的父親在當地的一家銅廠工作。他的家曾先後搬到鹽湖城、Hurley、新墨西哥、華盛頓和南非的 Phalaborwa。史蒂文斯曾就讀於位於維吉尼亞Waynesboro的Fishburne 軍校。並於1973年取得了密西根大學的航天工程工科學士學位，於1978年取得工科碩士學位，於1982年取得了亞利桑那大學的系統工程學博士學位。他於1975年搬到了 Tucson 並受僱於當地的 Kitt Peak國家天文台擔任程式設計師工作，並在那裡工作到1982年。 從1982年到1990年，他在位於New Haven, CT的Health Systems International擔任計算機服務副總監。他於1990年搬回了 Tucson 在他的專業領域從事寫作和顧問工作。 他在20世紀70年還曾狂熱地從事飛行運動並擔任兼職飛行教練工作。
