Since its debut in 1986, Jiangsu Province Yearbook has been administrated by the General Office of the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province, and organized by the Office of the Local Annals Editorial Committee, Jiangsu Province. It is the annual informative document that thoroughly records important events and presents in detail the current situations of natural environment, economy, politics, culture, society, and ecological construction in Jiangsu. Starting from the year 2012, the English edition of Jiangsu Province Yearbook has been compiled and published annually to provide foreign friends with basic knowledge of and detailed information about Jiangsu's development in recent years. As a principal source for the overseas publicity of the province, the yearbook is also aimed at offering essential data to foreign observers and researchers for their study and understanding of Jiangsu and China. This is the third volume of the English edition of Jiangsu Province Yearbook. The 2013 Edition is compiled on the basic sources and information about Jiangsu recent development in natural environment, economy, culture, society, and ecological construction in 2012. The yearbook consists of five parts: Introduction to Jiangsu Province, Chronicle of Important Events, Annual Review, Appendix and Index. The "Annual Review" serves as the main body of the yearbook, covering 23 subjects: Local Government Organizations, Rule of Law, Foreign Affairs and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, Income and Consumption, Public Finance, Economy, Manufacturing Industry, Service Industry, Agriculture, Foreign Trade, Infrastructure, Ecological Environment, Urban and Rural Development, Science and Technology, Education, Culture and Arts, Mass Media, Medical Service and Public Health, Sports, Human Resources, Social Security, Social Organization and Services, and Public Safety. The part about local government organizations is newly added to this edition. "Further Reading at the end of some sections provides additional information for in-depth understanding of the development in 2012. Altogether, there are 35 pieces of Further Reading" and 51 tables and lists. In the Appendix part, there are newly added entries about the People's Government of Jiangsu Province. The data and reference sources quoted in this book are provided by the relevant departments of the governments at different levels in Jiangsu Province:the appendix is compiled by Jiangsu Statistics Bureau; and the photographs inserted are contributed by various cooperative institutes and individuals. In principle, the time frame of this book is the year of 2012 (by the end of December), yet the time span of some information and/or photographs may be slightly extended to 2011 or 2013. All currencies are stated in RMB (yuan) unless otherwise stated. Along with the publication of the English edition of Jiangsu Province Yearbook, the electronic book will be released simultaneously with search and retrieval functions, accompanied by new-media applications for cell-phone or Tablet PC users available on App Stores.
