國外對於歷史語篇的深入研究推動著國內語言學界對歷史語篇的逐步了解、認識和思考。過去10年間陸續有論文發表，歷史語篇作為研究對象進入國內學界的視角。但和西方相比，無論是數量和質量上，國內歷史語篇的研究還處於相對薄弱的地位，有待提高。歷史語篇雖然在西方語言學界得到重視，但必須看到目前研究存在的不足。一方面大多數論文、專著集中在歷史教科書、學生歷史作文等學校歷史語篇上，對專業歷史語篇鮮有涉及。另一方面學者關注的重點是現代歷史語篇，很少研究早期和近代歷史語篇的語言特徵。同時對於歷史語篇在其演變過程中語言現象的變化缺少相應的研究。基於上述考慮，本書把研究對象框定在編年體史家書寫的早期歷史語篇和專業歷史學家撰寫的近代歷史語篇上，討論的是歷史語篇從早期到近代出現的語言變化。
