故事： 曹操與劉備對壘於漢中, 兩軍相持不下。曹操見連日陣雨，糧草將盡，又無法取勝，心正煩惱。這時士兵來問晚間的口令，曹操正呆呆看著碗內雞肋思想進退之計，便隨口答道：雞肋！當“雞肋”這個口令傳到主簿楊修那裡，這傢伙自作聰明，慫恿兵士們收拾行裝準備撤兵。兵問其故。楊修說：雞肋雞肋，棄之可惜，食之無味。今丞相進不能勝，恐人恥笑，明日必令退兵。於是大家都相信了。這件事被曹操知道了，曹操便以鼓惑軍心之名砍了楊修的頭。這便是關於雞肋的典故。
