愛德華·阿斯納六十年代初才進入電影界，1981年初，被認為政治上屬於自由派的愛德華·阿斯納在競選演員七葷八素領導的鬥爭中，擊敗被認為政治上屬於保守派的查爾頓·赫斯頓，隨之引起了一場相當長時期的電影界的政治鬥爭。1982年2月，愛德華·阿斯納把他私人募捐的二萬五千美元，作為醫藥費贈於薩爾瓦多難民，從而受到國務院的傳記。接著，由他擔任主要角色、收視率很高的電視系列片《盧·格蘭特》為哥倫比亞電視公司停播。1982年冬，好萊塢銀幕演員工會重新改選，但愛德華·阿斯納仍然以最高票數當選為主席。
