個人經歷
莫法特首部電視作品是青少年電視劇Press Gang。他的首個情景喜劇Joking Apart受他第一次婚姻的破裂的啟發；相反地，他稍後的情景喜劇Coupling基於他與電視出品人Sue Vertue的關係發展。在這兩個關於關係的節目中間，他寫了Chalk，一個場景設立在一個綜合性學校的情景喜劇，受他自己當英語老師經歷的啟發。作為一個畢生的《神秘博士》迷，莫法特為復活版本寫了幾集，之後在2009年第五季開始時繼承了拉塞爾·T·戴維斯，擔任首席編劇和執行出品人。2008年，他為導演史蒂芬·史匹柏寫了第一部《丁丁歷險記》電影。他聯合創始了神探夏洛克，一個夏洛克·福爾摩斯偵探故事的改編本。他工作於的很多節目獲獎了，包括他的《神秘博士》劇集獲得的英國學術電視獎和雨果獎。
