元謀盆地以發現170萬年前的元謀人聞名於世．本書首先論述了元謀人牙齒和脛骨化石特徵及盆地中6個不同時期的文化遺存；將厚673米的含元謀人化石的早更新世元謀組地層分成4段28層，2個哺乳動物群和7個孢粉段．其次，用遙感地質、顯微構造等手段研究了元謀盆地的新構造和地貌特徵，發現了新的地貌類型——土林地貌；重建了元謀人生活時期的古環境．繼之用C、古地磁、胺基酸、電子自旋共振、裂變徑跡等測年手段和岩石地層、生物地層、氣候地層等方法，在多年野外和室內綜合研究基礎上，建立了元謀盆地第四紀地層序列．最後，討論了青藏高原隆升和人類起源關係等7個問題．

The Yuanmou basin is well known to the world for the discovery of the Yuanmou Man of an age of about 1.7 Ma.This book deals with the characteristics of the fossil teeth and tibia of the Yuanmou Man as well as the six cultural relics of different ages unearthed in the basin.The Early Pleistocene Yuanmou formation 673 m thick.from which the Yuanmou Man was found,is subdivided into 4 members including 28 layers,2 mammal fauna and 7 spore-pollen assemblage zones.Remote sensing and microstructural studies of the neotectonic and geomorphic features have been made.leading to the establishment of a new type of landform—earth forest.The paleoenvironment for the survival of the Yuanmou Man is reconstructed.As a result of years field and Iaboratory work,the Quaternary stratigraphic sequence of the basin is constructed using different dating techniques e.g.C,palaeogeomagnetism,amino acid,electron spin resonance,fission-track dating,and the methods of lithostratigraphy,biostratigraphy and climato-stratigraphy.Finally,some probiems relating to the development of the basin are also discussed,especially the relation between the uplifting of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau and the origin of human species.
