《作為社會符號的語言:從社會角度詮釋語言與意義》中收錄了作者於1972年至1976抻期間寫成的13篇文章。有兩點從一開始就需要引起注意。一是寫於不同時間的13篇文章之所以能放在一起編成一本專著，是因為它們有著共同的主題，即都把語言看作是一種社會符號，並力圖從社會和文化的角度對語言的性質和意義進行了詮釋。二是這些文章在內容上有若干重疊之處，如語域、語境、語言系統以及語言與教育之間的關係等論題多次出現，甚至貫穿於全書始終，因而我們寫導讀時沒有嚴格按照文章編排的順序，而是打破了章節的界限，抓住幾個關鍵的問題進行評價，以幫助讀者較快地了解和掌握全書的精髓。
