2009年起擔任北京大學工學院生物醫學工程系主任;
1984年畢業於華中科技大學光學工程系雷射專業,獲工學學士學位;
1985年9月公派留學美國俄亥俄州立大學電機工程系攻讀學位, 1987獲工學碩士學位,1990年獲工學博士學位。兼任上海市雷射醫學重點實驗室主任,上海市雷射學會副理事長,《中國醫療器械雜誌》常務副理事長,《雷射生物學報》副主編,德國海德堡大學客座教授。

國家教育部長江學者特聘教授,國家傑出青年基金獲得者,國家科技部重點基礎研究計畫“973”項目“視覺修復基礎理論與關鍵科學問題”首席科學家。曾任美國加州大學爾灣分校副教授,美國弗羅里達州邁阿密大學生物醫學工程系助理教授。已發表學術論文100餘篇;在世界各地做特邀學術報告40餘次;發起並組織國際學術會議10餘次。在創新性產品研發方面,先後開發了多個眼科醫用雷射產品和智慧型化醫療器械,獲得美國專利2項、中國發明專利6項。擔任《中國雷射》、《雷射生物學報》、《中國醫療器械雜誌》、《中國組織工程研究與臨床康復》等多個國際、國內雜誌的主編,副主編及編委等職務。
任秋實教授的主要學術貢獻在於系統、深入地研究了雷射與生物組織相互作用的基理及套用,闡明了利用雷射技術作為物理手段對皮膚膠原組織重組修復、再生的調控機制;研究了角膜組織對各種不同雷射波長的生物組織學反應,根據193nm、213nm、2100nm、2940nm 等波長的雷射與角膜組織作用的特點,運用組織病理學的方法進行分析,提出了雷射個性化視力矯正的最新技術,為雷射屈光手術的臨床套用奠定了基礎。多項研究成果已被數家國際公司採納並套用到全固體雷射視力矯正系統,獲得美國FDA的認證,投入臨床套用。
當前,任秋實教授科研重點在於針對RP、AMD等視網膜疾病患者,開展視覺功能修復的基礎理論與關鍵科學問題研究,提出了視覺修復的新方法,並已在神經信號處理與建模、神經假體與微光機電技術、生物安全性與醫學植入相關問題等多個方向取得進展。
