語言的功能在於交際。鑒於寫作是一種交際行為，寫作任務應為寫作者創造交際的氛圍，本書從“語境效度” 這一概念入手，運用寫作測試、問卷調查、文本分析、觀察、回顧和訪談等多種方法對比了中國非英語專業大學生在語境特徵量不同的三次寫作任務上的寫作質量和文本特徵的異同，同時探討了寫作者在三次寫作中的認知過程和情感因素的變化。研究表明：語境特徵量對寫作質量、文本特徵、認知過程及情感因素產生了顯著影響。最後，本書指出，寫作任務應為外語學習者提供較豐富的語境特徵，從而激發學生的寫作興趣，培養學生的寫作交際意識。
