薩克雷(1811—1 863年)，英國小說家。自1833年起，薩克雷就在報章雜誌上發表文章，但是直到長篇小說《名利場》問世，他才被公認是天才小說家。薩克雷的主要作品有:《當差通信》、《凱瑟琳》、《紐克姆一家》、《維吉尼亞人》等。他的最後一部小說是《丹尼斯?杜瓦爾》，在他去世時僅完成8章，1864年在《康希爾雜誌》發表。

小說以兩個年輕女子蓓基?夏潑和愛米麗亞的一生為主線，展示了19世紀初期英國上層社會的生活畫面。《名利場》的故事以兩條線索展開，從同一個起點出發，相互交織，最後到達同一個終點。其中一條線索講述善良、笨拙、生活在富有家庭中的女子愛米麗亞；另一條線索講述機靈、自私、放蕩不羈的孤女蓓基?夏潑。兩人於1813年乘坐同一輛馬車離開平克頓女子學校，都在遭到家庭反對的情況下於1815年結婚，分別嫁給即將參加滑鐵盧戰役的兩名英國軍官。新婚不久，那場具有歷史意義的戰役打響了。愛米麗亞的丈夫戰死疆場，蓓基的丈夫戰後生還。接下來的十年中，蓓基生活一帆風順，在社會的階梯上不斷攀升，直至有幸覲見國王，而愛米麗亞卻因父親破產承受著極大的不幸。到了1827年，命運發生了逆轉，蓓基的生活落入毀滅的深淵，這其實是罪有應得；愛米麗亞卻轉而變得富裕幸福，可歸因於善有善報。但是，作者以靈活的諷刺手法，使兩位女主角最後的命運歸於平衡，仿佛在一個大的輪迴之後，回到故事開始時兩人命運的起點。《名利場》以“沒有主角的小說”為其副標題，說明《中譯經典文庫?世界文學名著?名利場(英語原著版第2輯)》不以個別人物的刻畫為重心，而著意於這個社會。
