在上一集故事中，尋寶專家本·蓋茨終於解開了《獨立宣言》的寶藏之謎，不但贏 得了美人的芳心，還得到了國家饋贈的巨額獎金……
如今，志得意滿的本也遇到了那么點小麻煩，由於他致力於全世界地遊蕩，就為了挖掘出被隱藏起來的歷史和寶藏，然而，本的女友阿比蓋爾·蔡斯卻以保護一切與歷史有關的遺蹟為己任，兩人之間的分歧越來越大，已經演變成了無休止的爭吵之後的階段性冷戰，本甚至收拾行囊，離開兩人的愛巢，搬到父親派屈克那裡去暫住了。
亞伯拉罕·林肯的死一直以來都是美國歷史上最慘重的損失，雖然兇手約翰·沃克斯·布斯隨即被揪了出來，可是在他住所搜到的日記卻無端地少了18頁，為本來已經明了的案情平添一層神秘的面紗。最讓人百思不得其解的是，100多年後今天，18頁失蹤的日記其中的一頁卻突然現身，學者傑布·威爾金森對其中一些曖昧不明的說詞解釋為暗殺信息，不幸的是，這頁日記中所有的一切，似乎都在指明一個事實，那就是本的曾曾祖父很可能是林肯刺殺一案背後真正的策劃與主謀，蓋茨家顯赫的聲譽蒙上了一層陰影。
為了證明自己的祖先當時只是在解碼一個藏寶圖，而非謀殺總統，本找來正與國稅局 糾纏不清的老搭檔賴利·普爾，聯同父親派屈克和互相看不順眼的女友阿比蓋爾，一起去尋找傳說中的那座“金城”，用事實來還給他的曾曾祖父一個清白。然而線索太多也太分散，將他們從巴黎帶到倫敦，甚至還潛入位於白金漢宮的女王私人起居室。不過，他們最後重新又回來了美國，那個一切開始的地方，本甚至不惜綁架現在的總統，只為了去看看只有總統本人才能翻看、記錄的“秘密之書”……最糟糕的是，本還驚動了他的母親艾米麗，一位著名的古英語學者，而艾米麗在32年前與派屈克就尋寶的側重點發生了激烈的爭吵之後，就再沒有說過一句話。這場同樣充滿了驚險刺激的旅程，不但幫助本和他的同伴們追蹤到了他們想知道的事實真相，還發現了這個世界上最珍貴的秘密遺蹟。

本攜手身為國家檔案保管員的前女友艾比蓋爾·查斯(戴安·克魯格飾)，和老搭檔——電腦高手萊利·普爾(賈斯汀·巴薩飾)踏上奔波世界各地的歷險旅程，其間險象環生。來自華盛頓特區、巴黎、倫敦和美國中心地帶等多處秘密中心的危機交疊在一起。

精彩花絮
·復活節彩蛋滾動的那組場景，是在蒙特維濃莊園拍攝的，至於背景中的白宮，則是後期製作的時候添加進去的。影片56分鐘時背景上方·白宮的屋頂上可以清楚地看到安全人員在密切注視著攝製組。
